Market drivers

What moves currency prices?

Interest rates

Central bank policy and rate expectations shape the relative appeal of currencies.

Economic data

Inflation, employment and growth figures can trigger repricing when they surprise expectations.

Risk sentiment

In uncertain conditions, flows may shift toward perceived safe-haven currencies.

Geopolitics

Elections, trade policy and conflicts can introduce sudden volatility.

Commodities

Currencies of commodity exporters often correlate with prices of key exports.

Liquidity

Activity varies across sessions and holidays, affecting spreads and price movement.

Spreads and trading costs

The spread is the difference between buy and sell prices and is a cost on each trade. Depending on your account, a commission may apply. Positions held overnight may incur swap charges or credits. Spreads can widen during low liquidity or major news.

Leverage and margin

Leverage lets you open a position larger than your margin deposit. It magnifies gains and losses equally — a small adverse move can produce a significant loss and may trigger a margin call or stop-out.

Managing forex risk

  • Size positions relative to your account balance
  • Use stop-loss orders, aware that slippage can occur
  • Check the economic calendar before major events
  • Avoid over-leveraging
  • Keep a written trading plan
  • Never trade money you cannot afford to lose
